Weight loss – is it better to be a tortoise than a hare?
It's no surprise to us here at Slimming World that a sensible and steady approach to weight loss has been shown to be more successful in the long-term than so-called ‘crash diets’.
A study by Drexel University in Philadelphia found that ‘hares’ who tried to rush to slimness lost less weight over two years than ‘tortoises’ who shed a consistent number of pounds each week.
At Slimming World, we don’t believe in ‘crash diets’. We focus on making long-term lifestyle changes through adapting your eating habits with Food Optimising, getting moving with Body Magic and gaining support in group.
As the study above suggests, developing stable and repeatable behaviours is key when it comes to maintaining changes over the long term, which is why we emphasise that the journey doesn’t end at target. In fact, it’s the start of a completely different one!
The most important thing is to be happy with your journey. Nobody wants to be losing and gaining the same half-a-pound each week, just as nobody wants to feel as though their healthy eating is restrictive or challenging.
That’s why Food Optimising is so fantastic, because it offers everyone the flexibility they need to create their own journey – with all the support you need along the way.
However scenic or direct the route to target may be, the important thing is getting to target and staying there, using all the tips, tricks, recipes and knowledge shared along the way.
